ACC Corner – Tom Wright, ACC Chairman

Carolina Shores POA has a long history of single-story homes, established as a community designed for retired families. Single-story homes typically have wider floor plans that allow for larger rooms throughout the home. Stairs take up a lot of space and can impede the flow of rooms. Plus, single-level homes allow for higher ceilings, skylights, and large windows, creating a more open sense of space. This also lets in plenty of natural light and relaxing views, ideal when you live in communities such as Carolina Shores, which is known for their surrounding natural greenery and trees.

Single-level homes allow the air to be distributed more evenly, saving you money on lower energy costs. The most important aspect is the lack of stairs. This has numerous ripple bonuses for single-story homes. First, they are simply easier to live in, as you do not have to run up and down stairs all the time, whether transporting laundry or simply making multiple trips when you forget an item.

The lack of stairs also makes cleaning easier. Having everything on one level makes it easier and less exhausting, making faster work of cleaning your home. Plus, you don’t have stairs to clean, which can be notoriously difficult. Finally, there is the important aspect of safety in having a single-story home. No stairs mean a decreased risk of injury, particularly for older adults and to those with disabilities that make stairs challenging or impossible. A single-story home is safer and more accessible for everyone.

More energy efficient

Provides easier escape during emergencies.

High resale value

Maintenance is significantly easier inside and outside the residence.

More livable living space

If elected I would like to learn from the current board members as much as possible including the proper procedures and policies for each committee and help as much as possible. Since I’ve retired to Carolina Shores, I’ve become very active with activities around our area.  I serve as the USA Ambassador in Brunswick County which involves working with the Brunswick County Recreation Board and local communities to help with the growth of pickleball in the area.  I started the CSPOA Pickleball Club in November 2020.  We now have over 50 CSPOA residents in our club. I was instrumental in working with our CSPOA Board in having 6 permanent pickleball courts installed in July 2022. I help with game night which runs in conjunction with Friday Happy Hour to include bocce and cornhole.  I’ve helped Kelly and the pool team with the opening and closing of the pool. With the help of our pickleball group, we help maintain the tennis and pickleball courts and surrounding area. I attend almost every CSPOA Board Meeting, and I help with most social events. I try to volunteer and help with anything that’s needed to make our CSPOA community a great place to live.

POA Library -- Sue O’Reilly

Some are still unfamiliar with the guidelines for donating books to the library and are leaving old copies (copyrighted before 2013) and books that do not circulate (crafts, how- to, oversized, children’s books and specialized subjects) in the return box. Only a few volunteers try to keep what we have shelved up to date and we take what is discarded every week to the public library which selects some for their book sale room. When someone cleans out their bookcase and brings books we cannot use, it causes a heavy load to pack and cart all into the car and deliver them.

Please do not use our POA Library as the repository for old books, magazines, etc. If you can carry them in, you can carry them to where they will finally end up!

We take all donations of fiction and non-fiction of general interest, copyrighted from the current year and 10 years back. We have limited shelving which we share with popular puzzle kits. If you donate a COMPLETE puzzle, please put the pieces in a plastic bag. Large print books would be especially appreciated and current magazines. Thank you for your cooperation.

Book Discussion Group – Susie Riggs

Stack of booksThe Book Discussion Group met on Friday, November 17. Our reading selection for the month was The Storied Life of A.J. Fikry by Gabrielle Zevin. A “poignant tale of how life takes unexpected turns and brings people together in unexpected ways”, it is the story of a bookstore owner who has suffered the loss of his wife, and a community that comes together to help him heal. The consensus among our members was that it was a touching story filled with well-written characters.

Our next meeting will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Friday, December 15, in the main room of the POA clubhouse. We will be discussing Somebody Else’s Shoes by Jojo Moyes.

Garden Club – Happy Mullen

A close-up of a garden

Description automatically generatedThe November Carolina Shores meeting was held November 8 at the POA clubhouse. For many, the highlight of the meeting was a ‘make-your-own centerpiece’ demonstration and activity. Diane Frederes, one of the members, showed the members how to use a pumpkin as a container for a lovely fall arrangement. Many members left with lovely arrangements for their homes.

The annual Soup and Bake sale was held November 18, also at the club house. The event was a success giving many residents a chance to sample delicious soups and baked goods, visit with neighbors, while raising money for the scholarships that the Garden Club awards every May to local students. Also in November, Garden Club members decorated the local library and the wall in front of the POA clubhouse.

Many events are planned throughout the year. In December, members of the club will meet at Talk of the Town restaurant for a Christmas luncheon. In January, our speaker will discuss the turf and Southern grasses, the diseases they are prone to, as well as necessary maintenance. Multiple fundraising events are being planned this year, beginning in January with a sea glass art project.

New members are always welcome at the Garden Club. The meetings are the second Wednesday of each month, annual dues are $10. Meetings always include a guest speaker, a plant raffle and a social hour. This year, the club is raffling a quilt also. Tickets are sold at every event and the winner will be chosen at the May luncheon. Please contact Mary Conover at 703-409-9612 with any questions.

Care Team – Flo Pflaster

http://thumbs.dreamstime.com/z/customer-care-team-d-isolated-43443409.jpgCare Team Volunteers

I would like to update this list. As of now, there are 59 people who had let me know they would be available to help with neighbors’ needs at times. I get few responses, mostly from the same 3-4 people. So, if you no longer wish to be on this list, please text me at 910-368-1070 or email me at dfp324@atmc.net

If you would like to stay on this list and would prefer to get notifications by email instead of through Nextdoor, please email me at dfp324@atmc.net and I will send out a group email when someone needs help in our community.

If you need help, please continue to let me know by calling the above number or my home at 910-368-1070.

We have many volunteers on the Care Team, ready and willing to help our neighbors with temporary assistance. I will do whatever I can to find someone to help - all you need to do is call or email me!

I have learned about a great organization called Neighbor to Neighbor (n2ncarolina.org(843) 839-0702.

They offer free rides to qualified people just as our CareTeam attempts to do, but with many more volunteers available to help. For information and to sign up for future needs, go to the website and click on “get involved” and then “be served” to fill out the form. Of course, I will continue to try and help our neighbors with the volunteers on my list, but this is an excellent option.

Thank you,
